According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, Neurology is a branch of medicine "concerned with the nervous system and its functional or organic disorders. Neurologists diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves."

Great strides in the field of neurology were made throughout the twentieth century. In the 1920s, the invention of the electroencephalograph (EEG) by Hans Berger enabled electrical brain activity to be recorded. In the 1970s and 1980s, the development of computerized axial tomography (CT) scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allowed a thorough, noninvasive view into the inside of the brain.  

Many aspects of neurology, from more precise diagnoses, to the development of specific therapies, to the introduction of a variety of medications to alleviate symptoms & correct neurological disorders, to the art of neurosurgery, have advanced as a direct response to the above inventions and other scientific developments.
