The Writing Center: Division of Graduate Studies

What is the Academic Literary Skills Test?

Beginning in May 2014 all Graduate School of Education students seeking New York State teacher certification will be required to take and pass four tests including the Academic Literary Skills Test (ALST). The ALST replaces the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) and it a more rigorous test of a candidate's reading comprehension and essay writing skills.

To help students prepare for the ALST, the Writing Center offers a variety of skills-enhancing activities, including one-on-one tutoring or small group seminars in-person or online. Topics covered include:

  • reading comprehension skills
  • grammar review
  • writing to a source
  • organizing thoughts and creating an outline
  • building an essay paragraph by paragraph
  • reducing test anxiety
  • time mamagement

Additional resources for ALST test prep are found here.
