Shalom Zion (Salome Alexandria)Salome was the wife of Alexander Jannaeus, called by Josephus' the "young lion." Talmudic tractate Sukkah notes that Alander Jannaeus at the water drawing ceremony on the festival of Sukkot poured the water on his feet rather than the custom on top of the altar. Thereupon the Rabbis in the courtyard pelted Alexander with their etrogim. Alexander called in the police and had 800 rabbis "hung" for that act of insurrection. This historical incident is also told over in one of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Alexander was said to serve Herring on gold plates and many aggadic stories exist about Salome's husband Alexander. However likewise much lore surrounds Salome. She became Queen of Israel after her husband's death. Salome's brother is Rabbi Shimon ben Shetah, who was the Av Bet Din of the Sanhedrin. While Alexander Jannaeus was a Sadducee, Salome the widow reinstated the Pharisees to power upon the reign of her Queenship.
