Course Description
Composition I is a course in the basics of formal writing. Students practice applying rules of grammar, word choice, organization, argument, and source documentation to what they read and write, developing critical reading and essay writing skills. Students will master the techniques of five different kinds of short essay writing.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
· Demonstrate competence in composing sentences, paragraphs, and full essays using proper sentence structure, syntax, and grammar.
· Formulate clear thesis statements and use them to organize and structure essays clearly.
· Organize ideas logically and appropriately to support the thesis statement.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between writer, audience, and purpose by using proper terminology, tone, and writing style for various essay tasks.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the various rhetorical strategies, essay types, and argument strategies by composing a variety of essay types.
· Demonstrate competence in information literacy, quotation, paraphrase, summary, and documentation of sources, and avoidance of plagiarism.
· Demonstrate competence in analyzing and critiquing expository and / or literary texts.
· Demonstrate competence in the full process of essay writing, including drafting, editing, revision, and proofreading of essays.
· Provide constructive feedback to other students' writing.
