Introduction to Jewish Newspapers, Periodicals, and Journals

Jewish presses are a phenomena of modernity, but many post-modern economic forces fueled by the technological revolutions we are witnessing  today are forcing many Jewish presses to publish online, since it is no longer economically feasible to print print editions of Jewish newspapers and magazines. Even with academic scholarly peer-reviewed journals, many presses are finding that it is more economically feasible to offer their scholarly journals via packages in proprietary (paid-for) databases.  At the Touro College Libraries a host of Jewish magazines, newspapers, and peer-reviewed journals are available from proprietary databases (see Using the Library for information on accessing these).  However, many newspapers and magazines are now also available on the Web.

One excellent website with a historical consciousness and invaluable to 20th century research is Historical Jewish Press. This site contains a collection of Jewish newspapers published in various countries, languages, and time periods. These display digital versions of each newspaper, making it possible to view the papers in their original layout. Full-text search is also available for all content published over the course of each newspaper’s publication.

Please look around the guide for other excellent resources for research using these materials.
